Small Dogs Bark A Lot — But You Can Stop the Barking!

February 25, 2011 on 9:27 am | By | In Pets

Let’s face it, small dogs can be yippy dogs.  Our dog Argus was no exception, until I discovered the PetSafe Small Dog Spray Bark Collar.  He was (note I say “was”!) an excitable barker….ie if there was another dog outside, or if he really wanted to do something right now.  It got to be a problem when we moved into an apartment, and when we traveled, as I couldn’t get him to stop until he got what he wanted.

The citronella spray collar that I bought is light weight, and shoots a very small, harmless, citronella spray in front of the dog’s nose when they bark.  It startles them, and they soon learn that if they don’t bark, they don’t get sprayed.

Argus no longer wears his bark collar, and we are enjoying our peace and quiet.

Owning A Pet Bearded Dragon

February 24, 2011 on 11:45 pm | By | In Pets

Just about every little boy and girl wants to have a pet. Kids seem to be great at adopting all kinds of creatures. Dogs and cats are the most common choices of course. Other top picks include gerbils, hamsters and goldfish. Well in addition to these obvious choices, there is another interesting critter that loves people and gets the thumbs up when it comes to cool pets. This critter is the bearded dragon.A lot of people may not be thrilled with the idea of having a pet lizard. But, of course these kinds of dragons are not the kind that spit fire and haunt dungeons. His official name is pogona and he hails from the rocky and dry woodlands in Australia. And the best part is he has a great personality.Their favorite pastime is hanging out on branches and they are great at climbing. Pogonas are omnivores, which means they eat both plant material and meat. A good diet for these dragons will include worms, roaches and crickets as well as broccoli, escarole and grated carrots. Lettuce, however, is a bad idea for it can cause dehydration. Citrus fruits are also not good choices. An irritated bearded dragon will show the spiny scales around his throat. The good news is that he will not do this to his owner. This behavior is when he feels as though he is threatened. As hinted at earlier, the pogona is a sociable buddy. As youngsters they are quite active but also friendly. As adults, they are not quite so active but do still like to be around people. What’s more, they can remain your companion for up to 10 years. Average life span is 5-8.The thought of a reptilian pet is enough to make many people cringe. A bearded dragon can put that uneasiness to rest. He is an unpretentious pet that will love his owner.

Dog Food to Keep Dogs Alert

February 17, 2011 on 6:15 am | By | In Pets

Dog food is something I never knew was specially designed to help those who are blind or deaf. The worker that came to the house for my sister brought along a bag of Burns Alert Canine(VAT Free) dog food to keep the dog that would be working with her alert. I know the dog is well-trained but this made me feel better whenever she had to cross the street or be near anything potentially dangerous. With it being gluten-free, my sister knows the dog’s body will take it in better.

The Profit in Breeding Dogs May not be What You Think

December 14, 2010 on 5:08 am | By | In Pets

Sometimes people hear of pups selling for thousands and think, “What a lucrative business!”  Indeed, two thousand dollars is a lot of money for a puppy.  However, it’s a mistake to think that this is clear profit.

Breeding dogs is costly, with many incidentals and no guarantees.  A responsible breeder spends thousands in vet costs alone to ensure a healthy pooch before mating even occurs.  In the event of a canine emergency, costs can be staggering.

Of course, feeding and housing a dog for its lifetime, plus stud fees and incidentals, can run into the thousands and tens of thousands.  Factor all this into the selling price of each pup (if you eventually manage to produce them), and the “profit” is often negligible.

A Pet Can Make Everything Better

About a year back I moved my family to Cairns. It was a tough move and one my children didn’t want to make. They were used to their old home and their old friends. I will be honest and say that I basically bribed my children to get them to move. I promised them they could each get an animal. That was not smart of me, because they held me to it. They demanded pets the day we moved in. I managed to wait a week before going to get animals for them. We actually adopted them from a shelter recommended to us by a Cairns vet.

We lost our canine when we are going for a walk in the park. A cat irritated it and it begun to give chase. I was caught without warning that I lost the handle on the leash. That was the last time we saw our dog. Most likely has gotten so far, it can’t discover its own means back again. We tried looking however to no avail. We were so downhearted because we love the canine very much. We’ve really given it up for lost. Then at some point, a couple got here by the house and returned our dog. They mentioned they discovered the canine loitering close to their house. With the data contained in the dog collar, they were in a position to track down our home and thus return our dog. We thanked them very profusely and promised to take additional care of our dog next time we go on a walk.
