The 1st documented invention of the doorhandle appears in U.S. Patent entries for the year 1878 when a patent for improvements on a device that closes the door was provided to a person named Osbourn Dorsey. Parts of a normal door-handle.

The end of the cylinder is the latch, which sticks out into a space chopped out of the door frame, and which prevents the door from being opened if the knob isn’t turned. A spring or similar mechanism causes the latch to return to its sticking out state whenever the knob is not being turned. Escutcheon plates are typically put round the knob and the place from which the latch protrudes.
