This is because this type of storage makes it easy to organize the many thousands of books that might be in the library. What is most commonly done is each rack and book is numbered and then divided into various sections. A database is maintained for every book that is there is the library and each of these books are kept in their specific locations. These books then become easily accessible as one can just look up the location of the book to find it on the library computer. This way one does not have to search the entire library for a single book.
