renewable petroleum technology

I’ll admit that I’m a fan of the new renewable petroleum technology.  While you’ve probably heard about ethanol (who hasn’t) you probably haven’t heard about this.  Instead of taking food products like corn and sugar cane (typical products used to produce ethanol), this process uses waste products to produce oil.  By taking genetically modified bacteria scientists have been able to use waste products like wheat straw and wood shavings and when fed to bacteria, those bacteria are able to turn that waste product that was of very little value and turn it into something far more valuable, black gold.  And this black gold doesn’t require the expensive and energy intensive refining that is necessary with light sweet crude.
