Owning a Car in North Carolina (Part 1)

If you are thinking of owning a car in North Carolina, there are several things you should know.  First of all, if you are moving to North Carolina from another state, the first thing you are going to need to do is get a North Carolina driver’s license.  Almost immediately following that, you are going to need to get your vehicle’s license plates and registration changed.  In order to get your driver’s license, you will have to go to your local Department of Motor Vehicles office and take a fairly short, written exam, which will demonstrate your knowledge of vehicle safety.  Prior to being allowed to take the exam, however, you will need to have several things: proof of residency (i.e. a leasing agreement or bank statements showing your current addresss), proof of liability insurance (copy of your insurance policy), proof of age and identity (usually two forms of picture identification will suffice) and proof of social security (your social security card).
