Organizing a cheap car audio speaker to replace a broken unit

I have been meaning to get a replacement but have been tossing up between a cheap car audio speaker as a replacement or an entire new system. The current system works quite well but some of the specials I have seen lately have been very tempting. A friend suggested that I just get a replacement unless I want to burn a hole in my pocket. He made a pretty compelling argument to suggest that it is better to just replace the broken speaker than to worry about additional installation and insurance for a higher grade system.
